capturing device

Sunday, May 9: Mother's Day

I hardly need to explain it, right? The tradition, according to the film, is that the mafia Don cannot refuse a request on his daughter’s wedding day. Luca Brasi, very nervously, wants a favor from the Godfather. This is his preamble.

I woke up with this thought and spent 20 minutes laying in bed thinking it over and over so that I wouldn’t forget it before I made it down to my office to write it out. Yes, I could have jumped out of bed and headed down to my office at 4am and change when I woke up, but it is Mother’s Day—let me relax a bit!

Though I do appreciate the gift. This is the ethos behind capturing device—thoughts and ideas float through the ether all the time. Some of them can be captured by anyone, and some of them can be captured only by you. And if you don’t capture them, they’re gone. Like Luca Brasi, if you don’t act now, you’ll not get the audience again.

On Mother’s Day, I’m asking a favor of my children—not breakfast (though I will get that), not gifts (though that would be nice), not a handmade card (ok, I do want that). But mostly, let me mother—not just parent, but mother.

They could have gone to anyone, but they came to me. I am honored and grateful that I was invited to be their mother on the days of their births. I am glad I captured them.
